There used to be a piece of accepted wisdom that children’s bunk beds and other beds for children had to be strictly functional; presumably because, children are apt to turn their beds into fighter planes or space ships or boats or fairy tale castles or the hideaways of pirates or whatever. Well, that’s all well and good; it was, even, kind of understandable. It is understandable no more, though – thanks to companies like the wonderful Sandman Beds, which has been creating beds for kids that actually help them tap into those imaginary worlds.
The theory goes something like this. If your child is going to treat his bed as a pirate’s Treasure Island, why not actually make it into a pirate’s Treasure Island? Bespoke beds for children, after all, are a blank canvas. They do not have to be shaped exactly like a bed, or a bunk bed, and they certainly do not have to be coloured in single shades or without decoration. Children’s bunk beds need a frame that supports two beds, one on top of the other, and a ladder, and some safety mechanism for ensuring that the sleeper in the top bunk does not roll out during the night: but they do not need to be boring.
Think about this: everything else in your child’s life is, in one way or another, designed to look appealing, to be interesting, to stimulate and entertain. So, why not the bed? Beds for children are one of the major constants in their lives – they go to bed every night and stay up in bed every morning. Children’s bunk beds are pretty much the one location on earth that your child is guaranteed to see at least twice a day – and to occupy for the whole of the night. So why not pay attention to that amount of time and use, and start thinking about something that is built of quality materials and decorated in an inventive and interesting way?
Beds for children can be made to look like anything whose shape is based around a bed. Boats are very popular, as are fairy tale princess type beds, or race cars, or space ships. Where a child’s interest lies with something that is less easy to represent as a bed (so while a car is easy to do as a bed, an interest in planes may not be translated into a bed with wings for reasons of space), you can still have it decorated in ways that remind the child of his or her passions.
Children’s bunk beds and other beds for kids are the focal point of whole years of their lives. While everything around them is colourful and fun, the bed tends to be functional and bland. No wonder so many children dislike going to bed. Unless we start using beds for children that stimulate them in some way, they always will be. Once you cotton on to this, and start thinking about using beds that are as fun and interesting as everything else in your kid’s life – well, then bedtime gets easy.
